Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline to Link Nigeria With Europe
Nigeria, Niger and Algeria are pressing ahead with the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, an ambitious project designed to link Africa’s largest natural gas reserves to European markets.
The 4,128 km pipeline is expected to carry up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas a year once completed, according to Business Insider Africa.
The project would send natural gas from Nigeria through Niger to Algeria, where it would connect to existing pipeline networks serving Europe. Algeria has already begun work on its section, while Niger is expected to start construction on its 720 km segment in early 2027.
The pipeline is one of Africa’s largest energy projects and is intended to strengthen the continent’s role in global gas markets. It could also help Europe diversify supplies after the loss of much of its Russian gas.
The project competes with the planned Nigeria-Morocco pipeline, which would carry gas from West Africa to Morocco and on to Spain and other European markets.
