Netanyahu Confirms Re-Election Bid
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will run for another term in this year’s election, his Likud party confirmed on Wednesday.
The announcement followed comments by US President Donald Trump, who had questioned whether Netanyahu intended to remain in politics.
The election date has not yet been officially announced, but a vote must be held by October.
Earlier, ABC News journalist Jonathan Karl quoted Trump as saying he was unsure whether Netanyahu would seek another term. “He’s had an amazing career. Does he want to continue?” Trump reportedly said.
The election will be Israel’s first since the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, which triggered the war in Gaza.
Netanyahu has led Israel’s coalition government since December 2022. His tenure has been marked by mass protests at home and conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.
Recent polls suggest his coalition may struggle to secure a parliamentary majority. According to a June survey, 61% of Israelis do not want Netanyahu to run again.
However, opposition parties are also unlikely to form a governing majority without support from Arab parties, according to polling data.
