European leaders will seek to persuade US President Donald Trump to support a new diplomatic initiative aimed at restarting peace talks between Russia and Ukraine during next week’s G7 summit in France, according to Bloomberg.

Sources cited by the agency say the United Kingdom, France and Germany plan to use face-to-face meetings with Trump to secure his backing for renewed negotiations.

The three countries believe recent developments on the battlefield have strengthened Ukraine’s position and could create a more favorable environment for diplomacy.

European officials reportedly hope this will open the door to talks that go beyond the framework discussed after Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last year.
