EU Opens Accession Negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova

The European Union has taken a significant step in its enlargement process, with ambassadors from all 27 member states approving the opening of the first phase of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. Talks will officially begin on Monday at an intergovernmental conference.

In the case of Ukraine, the move carries particular political weight at a time when the country is defending itself against the Russian invasion while seeking closer integration with European institutions.

The process had long been blocked by Hungary, which objected to Kyiv's treatment of its Hungarian minority. Following a recent agreement between Budapest and Kyiv, that obstacle has been removed.

The first round of negotiations will focus on fundamental areas including the rule of law, the functioning of democratic institutions and the protection of fundamental rights.

EU officials described the decision as recognition of the reforms both countries are implementing despite difficult circumstances.
