Technical Fault Forces Pope to Leave Spain on King's Plane

Pope Leo XIV had to change his return plans at the end of his week-long visit to Spain. His departure from the island of Tenerife on Friday was delayed by a technical fault on the Iberia aircraft due to carry the papal delegation to Rome.

The Pope had already boarded the plane and was preparing for departure after bidding farewell to King Felipe VI and other Spanish officials when the aircraft developed a fault. According to the captain, the engine failed to start, likely due to strong winds.

The crew subsequently informed passengers that the problem could not be resolved immediately and that they would have to disembark.

The Spanish government announced that the Pope would use the Spanish Air Force's Falcon aircraft, normally used by the Royal Family, which was offered to him by the king.
