FIFA to Pay Somali Referee Barred from World Cup by US

Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has missed a historic opportunity to become the first Somali to officiate at a football World Cup after being refused entry to the United States. US authorities cited alleged contacts with individuals suspected of links to terrorist organizations. FIFA has confirmed it will pay Artan the full remuneration he would have received during the tournament.

Artan, who was named Africa's best referee in 2025, received a warm welcome on his return to Somalia. His professional career has not been derailed, however, as UEFA has nominated him to officiate the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in August.
