Brussels Responds as Anthropic Restricts Advanced AI Models

The European Commission said on Sunday it is assessing the practical implications of US government export controls affecting artificial intelligence company Anthropic, warning that emergency measures should not discriminate against partners.

Anthropic announced on Friday 13 June that it would shut down access to its most advanced AI models for foreign nationals after the US government ordered the suspension, citing national security concerns.

"We are seeing a new generation of highly capable AI models reach the market. These models offer significant benefits, including for cyber-defense, but ‌they also raise serious cybersecurity concerns that need to be addressed", Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier said. "We believe that contingency measures taken in this light should not be discriminatory against partners", he added. "This development is a further illustration of why Europe needs to strengthen its technological sovereignty", Regnier said, noting that the Commission is closely examining "practical consequences of this for European users of these services".
