European Parliament to Vote on EU-US Trade Deal
The European Parliament is set to vote on Monday on legislation needed to implement the trade and customs agreement signed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump in July 2025.
The agreement aims to stabilize transatlantic trade relations after a period marked by tariff disputes and threats of escalating trade measures.
Under the deal, the United States will impose a 15% tariff on most imports from the European Union. In return, the EU will reduce tariffs on US industrial goods and expand market access for selected American agricultural and fishery products.
During negotiations, the European Parliament secured several safeguards, including a sunset clause that limits the preferences until the end of 2029 and mechanisms designed to protect European industry and agriculture.
According to the European Commission, the agreement will provide greater predictability for businesses and investors, protect jobs and help prevent further trade tensions between the world’s two largest economic blocs.
If approved by Parliament, the legislation will still require formal approval from the Council of the European Union.
