Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Yet to Peak

The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has not yet reached its peak, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Bruno Michon, the organization's representative in the country, warned that the epidemic could continue spreading for another year.

Efforts to contain the outbreak are complicated by the emergence of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or proven treatment.

More than 800 infections and at least 192 deaths have been confirmed so far. The virus is spreading rapidly across three provinces, while health officials acknowledge that the true scale of the outbreak remains unclear.

The response has also been hindered by a shortage of treatment centres and mistrust of health measures among parts of the population.

Humanitarian workers have faced verbal abuse, threats and physical confrontations. According to the Red Cross, building trust within local communities will be critical to containing the outbreak, as efforts to halt transmission may prove significantly more difficult without public cooperation.
