Trump Settles Row with Niece over Leaked Tax Documents
US President Donald Trump has settled a long-running legal dispute with his niece, Mary Trump, whom he accused of unlawfully providing tax documents to The New York Times. Those documents formed the basis of a 2018 investigation into the Trump family's finances and alleged tax avoidance schemes.
Both parties announced an out-of-court settlement and asked a New York court to formally dismiss the case. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Following the dismissal, Trump will not be able to take further legal action on the same matter.
Trump filed the lawsuit in 2021, claiming his niece had violated a nondisclosure agreement regarding the Fred Trump Sr. estate. Mary Trump, a psychologist and author of a critical book about her family, later publicly admitted to having been a source for the journalists.
Although an appeals court acknowledged last year that Trump had some legal basis for his claim, it also indicated that any damages awarded would be merely symbolic.
