Pope Leo XIV to Visit Peru, Where He Once Served

Pope Leo XIV is expected to visit Peru in the first half of November, Peruvian interim President Jose Balcazar announced following a meeting with the pope at the Vatican.

Balcazar said the pope is expected to spend up to 10 days in the country, visiting the capital Lima, his former post in Chiclayo and several other dioceses.

Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, is a US-born cardinal who served as bishop of the Diocese of Chiclayo in northwestern Peru and obtained Peruvian citizenship in 2015.

After the meeting, Balcazar said the pope remembers Chiclayo fondly and that their discussions covered political topics as well as local cuisine. The meeting at the Vatican lasted approximately two hours.

The pope is also expected to visit Uruguay and Argentina later this year, making the Peru trip part of a broader South American tour.
