Pistorius Calls for NATO Defense Plan for US Pullback

European NATO allies must prepare for a period in which they will bear a greater share of responsibility for their own defense, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in Brussels.

Pistorius noted that any reduction in US military engagement in Europe would require a thoroughly prepared and coordinated plan. He stressed the importance of preventing gaps in defense capabilities that could arise if the United States were to withdraw forces before its European allies are ready to replace them.

NATO member states recognize the need to strengthen conventional deterrence and defense, he added, but the process will take time and require significant investment.
