Heat Wave Hits Europe: Alcohol Ban, Fan Zone Shut
Europe has been hit by an intense heat wave, forcing several countries to take emergency measures. In France, the highest heat warning level is expected in 35 departments on Sunday, with temperatures forecast to reach 39C to 40C, and up to 41C in some places.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has banned the consumption of alcohol at public events, including the traditional Fête de la Musique festival.
In Germany, heat warnings are in effect across most of the country, where temperatures are rising to 38C. Meteorologists are also warning of the risk of severe thunderstorms caused by a combination of heat and high humidity.
In Italy, temperatures have reached around 36C to 37C. In Spain, the fan zone set up in Madrid for watching the World Cup had to be closed because of extreme temperatures.
Scientists warn that climate change is increasing both the frequency and intensity of heat waves, which, in addition to health risks, also cause economic damage and lower labor productivity.
