Starmer Is Set to Step Down, According to the Observer
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to resign on Monday and set out a timeline for his departure, according to a report in The Observer. The newspaper noted, however, that Starmer remains focused on fulfilling his duties as prime minister.
According to the report, Starmer discussed the matter with his wife at Chequers, his country residence, before reaching a final decision.
The Observer, whose report did not cite sources, said Starmer concluded that his position was no longer tenable after discussions with cabinet ministers, advisers, donors and union leaders.
Yet as recently as Friday, the prime minister had declared he would fight any challenge to his leadership and urged the Labour Party not to be torn apart by internal disputes.
Starmer led the center-left Labour Party to a landslide election victory in 2024, but he has become deeply unpopular following a series of scandals and political about-faces that have left many voters with the impression that he is unable to fulfill his promise to improve their standard of living.
Should he resign or be removed from office, the country would be appointing its seventh prime minister in just over 10 years, the highest turnover in nearly two centuries.
