Paris Restricts Alcohol During Heatwave

French authorities have imposed restrictions on public alcohol consumption in parts of Paris as an extreme heatwave coincides with the Fête de la Musique street festival, according to Politico.

The measures are intended to protect public order and reduce heat-related health risks. Medical experts warn that alcohol can accelerate dehydration and hinder the body’s ability to regulate its temperature, increasing the risk of heatstroke.

The police order bans stronger alcoholic drinks along the Canal Saint-Martin, including the Quai de Valmy and Quai de Jemmapes, from 8 a.m. on Sunday. From 1 p.m., takeaway alcohol sales are also banned in the area, except at licensed bars and restaurants.

The restrictions also apply along parts of the Seine, where authorities have banned the consumption, possession and transport of alcohol, as well as glass bottles, on riverbanks in several districts and on the Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis.

Paris police said street drinking had long contributed to public disorder and noise, with more than 1,000 fines issued for the offence in 2025 alone.
