Three Killed in School Shooting in Philippines
Three people have been killed and five others injured in a shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban, in the central Philippines.
The attack took place on Monday morning at around 9 a.m. local time. Police have arrested two suspects and are investigating the motive and circumstances of the shooting.
Local police chief Noelito Getigan said the attackers used two firearms, a .38-caliber revolver and a 9mm pistol. One of the suspects is a ninth-grade student who was apprehended shortly after the shooting. The second suspect later surrendered to authorities.
Police have increased their presence at the school to ensure the safety of students, staff, parents and the wider community. Authorities also urged the public not to spread unverified information about the incident.
School shootings are rare in the Philippines. One of the most serious recent incidents occurred in July 2022, when an attacker killed three people, including former Lamitan mayor Rose Furigay, during a graduation ceremony at Ateneo de Manila University's law school in Quezon City.
