Polish Priestly Ordinations Fall from Historic Highs

A fundamental change is taking place in the Catholic heart of Europe. Although Poland continues to lead the continent in the absolute number of priestly ordinations, interest in religious vocations has been declining there for some time, according to Katolisch.de.

According to current church projections by the Polish news agency KAI, the total number of new priests will fall below 200 in 2026 for the first time since 2000. Only 196 new priests (130 diocesan and 66 religious) are expected at the upcoming traditional ordinations around the feast of Saints Peter and Paul (June 29).

This decline continues a downward trend from previous years, with 235 priests ordained in 2024 and only 208 last year. While numbers remain stable in some areas, other regions will not ordain a single priest this year. The total number of diocesan priests in the country fell by 6.4 percent between 2018 and 2024 alone.

Church analyses cite the ongoing secularization of society and unfavorable demographics as the main causes of the decline. A new reform that extended seminary training to seven years may also have played a role.

However, Church officials view the situation in part as a return to normalcy following a previous exceptional period. Poland experienced an extraordinary boom especially during the pontificate of John Paul II, when the number of seminarians rose sharply and reached a historic peak in 1995 with 900 ordained priests.
