French Developer Designs Low-Cost Modular Wind Turbine

French developer Fabien Bruin has designed an innovative modular wind turbine as part of his Wind To Watt project. The aim is to supply clean electricity to regions without access to a centralized grid.

According to Interesting Engineering, the project is based on the idea that green energy should be available everywhere without the need for large and expensive infrastructure. The turbine is designed to operate in a wide range of environments, including coastal areas. Transport and installation require no heavy machinery, cranes or terrain modifications.

The structure is exceptionally lightweight because it is made of aluminum tubes and plastic sheeting. That eliminates the need for concrete foundations or complex grid connections. The concept was also designed with full recyclability of all components in mind from the outset.

The turbine is expected to cost €2,500 ($2,900), with estimated annual maintenance costs of just €50 ($58). With an estimated lifespan of 25 years, the project puts the payback period at five years and net profit at about €10,000 ($11,500).

Thanks to its modular design, the system can be scaled flexibly, repaired easily and adapted to local energy needs. That could make it a useful option for farmers and isolated communities. The project has already established a network of more than 90 strategic contacts in Europe, Africa, India and the Middle East.
