Young Britons Want New Vote on Rejoining the EU
Most young Britons view Brexit as a failure and would support a new referendum on the United Kingdom rejoining the European Union, according to a survey by the think tank More in Common.
If a referendum were held today, 60% of respondents aged 18 to 28 would vote to rejoin the EU, while only 9% would vote to remain outside the bloc. Among those most likely to vote, support for rejoining rises to 81%.
Half of those surveyed described Brexit as a failed project, while only 16% considered it a success. Some 37% said it could have worked, but that politicians had ruined it. Another 29% believed it had no chance of succeeding from the start.
The survey also found that 62% of young people would like to see a referendum on rejoining the EU within the next five years. Only 11% opposed a new vote.
The results come as the composition of the British electorate continues to change. Since the 2016 referendum, millions of mostly older voters who supported leaving the EU have died, while millions of young people who were too young to vote at the time have joined the electorate.
