Trump Orders Push for Quantum Computer by 2028
US President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders aimed at accelerating the development of a powerful quantum computer while strengthening the protection of government systems against new cyber threats. The White House believes such a computer could be built by 2028.
Quantum computers use the laws of quantum physics to solve certain complex problems far faster than today’s supercomputers. At the same time, they could break current encryption systems, raising fears of aggressive cyberattacks.
One order sets a goal of moving key government systems to post-quantum cryptography by 2030 or 2031. The administration is also seeking to strengthen US leadership in the quantum race against China, which could drive advances in artificial intelligence, materials science and chemistry.
The package also calls for the Pentagon to deploy quantum sensors by 2028. Such sensors could help aircraft navigate in areas where GPS has been disrupted and, from satellites, detect underground activity such as tunnel construction or missile silos.
The orders also seek to strengthen international cooperation on intellectual property protections and supply chain security. Federal agencies are to develop plans for deploying quantum-enabled sensors and networks over the next five years.
