Australia Expands Bird Flu Testing After New Case

Australian authorities have stepped up monitoring of wildlife and livestock after a second state confirmed a case of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza. In South Australia, a migratory bird tested positive just days after the first two confirmed cases were reported near Esperance in Western Australia.

Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said there is currently no risk to humans. She also stressed that properly prepared chicken and eggs remain safe to eat. Authorities in South Australia are conducting ground surveillance and drone surveys near magpie breeding sites on the west coast. They have also increased testing in high-risk areas.

Western Australia is awaiting confirmation of a possible third case after sending 11 samples for testing following dozens of reports of sick or dead birds. The confirmed cases prompted Papua New Guinea to impose a temporary ban on poultry meat and poultry products from Australia.

Collins said the restrictions have since been lifted, with some exceptions.
