Doctor Sentenced to Life for Magdeburg Christmas Market Attack
A Saudi Arabian doctor was sentenced to life in prison in Germany on Friday for carrying out the deadly attack at the Magdeburg Christmas market in December 2024.
Days before Christmas, the convicted psychiatrist deliberately drove a rented BMW into a crowd of shoppers. The attack lasted one minute and four seconds.
Six people were killed, including five women between the ages of 45 and 75 and a 9-year-old boy. Hundreds of others were injured. The attack shocked Germany and intensified an already heated debate over immigration just months before the country's parliamentary elections in February 2025.
Prosecutors charged the defendant with six counts of murder and the attempted murder of hundreds of other people, arguing that he had planned the attack for several weeks.
Investigators said the attacker had a history of anti-Islamic rhetoric and expressed right-wing views. However, prosecutors concluded that ideology was not the primary motive for the attack.
According to the prosecution, he acted alone and was driven by deep personal resentment over the outcome of a civil lawsuit he had lost, as well as the dismissal of several criminal complaints he had filed.
