Ukraine Is Building Its Own AI Infrastructure
Ukraine plans to build its own computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence to reduce its dependence on foreign technology services and strengthen the security of critical systems during the war.
Telecommunications operator Kyivstar has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the ministry of economy, and its parent company, VEON, will provide funding for the first phase of the project, valued at tens of millions of dollars. The first phase is expected to have a capacity of at least three to five megawatts.
According to Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov, the military is currently the largest user of artificial intelligence in Ukraine.
Therefore, he said, these computations cannot be run abroad, as this is a matter of national security. The project also fits into a broader European effort to build its own digital capabilities.
Representatives from Microsoft and Nvidia have pointed out that Ukraine needs its own data centers to store sensitive data domestically and develop AI solutions for both military and civilian use.
