Trump Nominates New ICE Director
US President Donald Trump has nominated Lance Schroyer to serve as director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Senate has also called for his nomination to be confirmed without delay.
Trump said Schroyer has more than 29 years of law enforcement experience in Oklahoma. ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed director since early 2017, and the agency has long been led by acting directors.
The fight against illegal immigration has been one of the Trump administration's top priorities since taking office last year. ICE plays a key role in detaining and deporting migrants.
Human rights organizations argue that the government's approach violates civil liberties and creates a dangerous environment, particularly for ethnic minorities. Criticism intensified after the deaths in January of two US citizens in Minnesota, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, who were shot and killed by ICE agents during a raid. The incident led to nationwide protests.
Trump defends his immigration policy, arguing that it is intended to curb illegal immigration and strengthen the country's security.
