Kostyantynivka Becomes New Flashpoint in Ukraine War

Russian troops are gradually advancing toward the outskirts of Kostyantynivka, one of the most important Ukrainian defensive strongholds in the Donetsk region. The city forms part of a fortified zone that also includes Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and Druzhkivka, all of which are crucial to Ukraine’s ability to hold positions in the east.

According to Ukrainian commanders, small groups of Russian soldiers have been attempting to infiltrate the city, but Ukrainian forces have so far repelled them. Analysts say that despite heavy losses and successful Ukrainian strikes on Russian logistics, Moscow still has enough manpower to continue its offensive.

The capture of Kostyantynivka would open a route toward other cities in northern Donetsk. However, experts expect any battle for the city to be long and extremely costly, similar to the fighting for Avdiivka or Pokrovsk.

Ukrainian supply routes are under constant fire from artillery, drones and guided bombs. Ground robots are increasingly being used to transport supplies to frontline positions.

Ukrainian strikes on Crimea and Russian oil infrastructure have complicated Moscow’s supply lines. Even so, analysts warn that if current trends continue, Kostyantynivka could eventually fall.
