Dozens Held as Turkish Police Disperse Istanbul Pride March

On Sunday, Turkish police cracked down on participants in the Istanbul Pride march, detaining around 50 people. Among those taken into custody was journalist Müberra Ünsal, despite her repeatedly identifying herself with a valid press card, according to Attitude.

The Turkish Journalists' Union strongly condemned the police action, calling Ünsal's detention unlawful. The union said journalists covering the event once again faced unacceptable interference while carrying out their work.

Istanbul's Pride march, which had been held annually since 2003, was first banned by authorities in 2015, citing security concerns and the need to maintain public order.

Despite the ban, LGBTQ+ activists and their supporters continue to organize annual protest rallies. Last year, at least 53 people were detained during the Pride event.
