US-Iran Talks Progressing Well, Trump Says
US President Donald Trump said negotiations between the United States and Iran are progressing favorably, telling reporters on Wednesday that relations between the two countries are improving and that recent meetings in Qatar have yielded positive results.
"The denuclearization of Iran is moving along well. They've had very good meetings, and we'll see", Trump said.
The United States and Iran held technical-level talks in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday on ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and reaching a permanent ceasefire, according to a source familiar with the talks and an Iranian official.
Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with the Qatari prime minister before the talks began. Qatar, along with Pakistan, is acting as a mediator in the negotiations. Neither Kushner nor Witkoff took part in the negotiations themselves, according to the source.
Trump added that relations with Iran are developing very well and that Tehran has, in his words, "come a long way". "I think they're fine", he said.
