Canada Confirms Eurovision Debut for 2027
A Canadian broadcaster and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced on Wednesday that Canada will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027. The announcement comes after Canada's national broadcaster officially became a full member of the EBU.
Canada has been an associate member of the EBU since 1950, but full membership is required to compete, according to Politico.
Participation was a goal of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose government allocated C$150m (about $105m) for this purpose last year. Marie-Philippe Bouchard, head of Canadian broadcasting, said the contest, which will take place in Bulgaria, would give domestic talent a chance to shine on the world stage and give fans a sense of pride in seeing their country represented.
Canada is not the first non-European country to participate in the contest. Israel joined in 1973, Morocco in 1980 and Australia in 2015. Although this is Canada's debut, its citizens have sung in the contest before, most notably Céline Dion, who won in 1988 as Switzerland's representative.
