Empire State Building Stunt Ends in Marriage Proposal

Two Russian citizens climbed to the top of the Empire State Building's spire in New York on Wednesday to unfurl a large banner calling for world peace. Their dangerous stunt, however, turned into a marriage proposal.

The pair, dressed in black sleeveless outfits, clung to the building's antenna structure near the glowing red light at its summit, approximately 443 m above the sidewalk in downtown Manhattan.

In the wind, they held a black banner with white lettering that read: "When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace." It was not immediately clear who they were or when and how they had reached the top. It was not long before they began slowly descending to a slightly lower platform within the antenna's structure.

They both stopped there. One person got down on one knee, after which the couple embraced and kissed, according to aerial footage from a local news network.

The New York Police Department closed off the streets around the building and subsequently detained both individuals.
