Spain Issues Work Permits to over 600,000 Migrants
Spain has granted temporary work permits to 609,737 migrants while their applications for legal residency are being processed, allowing them to work in the formal economy before a decision is made on their status.
A total of 1.17 million people applied for legalization between 16 April and 30 June, more than double the government's initial estimate of 500,000 applications. Most applicants come from Latin American countries.
The program is intended for undocumented migrants who have lived in Spain for at least five months prior to the end of 2025 and have no criminal record.
As of 30 June, approximately 160,000 of the 609,737 permit holders had found legal employment. So far, 11,000 people have received a one-year residence permit.
The government is working with employers in the construction, tourism, transportation and caregiving sectors to help migrants find work.
Approximately 81% of applicants are under 45 years of age, and 57% of them are men.
