NATO Summit to Feature US Defense Initiatives

Next week's NATO summit in Ankara is expected to feature a series of US initiatives aimed at softening the political impact of the reduction in the US military presence in Europe, according to Euractiv. Alongside discussions on the future of the Alliance, new defense projects and arms agreements are expected to be unveiled.

President Donald Trump's administration has already begun reassessing the deployment of US troops in Europe. Two months ago, it announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany and the cancellation of the planned deployment of a long-range weapons battalion and an air defense battalion.

On Tuesday, US defense contractors are set to present projects they will carry out in Europe in cooperation with the US government. They are also expected to discuss the possible sale of strategic weapons systems, including Tomahawk cruise missiles. The package could also include the integration of American Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets into European launch platforms.

German officials remain cautiously optimistic. They claim that key decisions were already made at last year's summit in The Hague and that Ankara will focus on the Alliance's managed transition to its next phase.

All 32 NATO member states are expected to issue a joint statement on the threat Russia poses not only to Ukraine but also to the Alliance. Spain's opposition to an increased defense spending target could be an obstacle to the negotiations.
