Moldova's Prime Minister Resigns
Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced on Friday that he was stepping down, a move that also triggers the resignation of his government. He did not give a specific reason for his decision.
"The moment I realized that I could no longer carry out my mandate in accordance with my principles and convictions, I chose to step down", Munteanu said. He added that he remained ready to serve the country in any other capacity.
The unexpected resignation complicates matters for pro-European President Maia Sandu and her ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS). Under Moldova's Constitution, the president must first consult parliamentary parties before nominating a new prime minister.
Before entering politics, Munteanu spent two decades working abroad, including at the World Bank. He became prime minister after the September 2025 parliamentary elections, in which PAS secured a strong mandate to continue Moldova's path toward EU integration.
Bordering Ukraine and Romania, Moldova was granted EU candidate status in 2022. Its politics have long been shaped by a divide between pro-European forces and parties advocating closer ties with Russia.
