European Heat Wave Takes Heavy Toll

The heat wave that swept across Europe between 20 and 28 June caused at least 3,700 excess deaths in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. According to experts, it was one of the most severe heat waves ever recorded on the continent, disrupting energy production, damaging infrastructure and placing healthcare systems under severe strain.

Authorities caution that the figures remain preliminary and that the final death toll could be significantly higher.

France was the hardest-hit country. Health Minister Stéphanie Rist confirmed 2,025 excess deaths, most of them among people aged 45 and older. The national public health agency reported that deaths occurring at home rose by 91% during the most intense week of the heat wave. Mortality also increased in hospitals and nursing homes.

Belgium's Health Ministry described the situation as unprecedented, reporting around 1,200 excess deaths. More than 530 of the victims were aged over 85, while 180 were younger than 65.

The Netherlands and Ireland have reported a further 480 weather-related deaths, with most of the victims in both countries aged over 80.
