Cuba Hit by Nationwide Power Grid Collapse

Cuba’s national power grid collapsed at noon on Monday, triggering a nationwide blackout that cut power to around 10 million people. The country's grid operator, UNE, said it had launched an investigation into the cause of the outage.

Even before the collapse, nearly two-thirds of the country had already lost power. Cuba has endured rolling blackouts for months, with some outages recently lasting an entire day.

The crisis has long been attributed to the grid’s aging infrastructure and the US oil embargo, which has severely disrupted the island's fuel supplies.

The blackout is another major blow for Cubans, many of whom are already struggling with frequent power cuts that make it difficult to work or sleep in the Caribbean summer heat.
