Slovakia Temporarily Suspends Schengen Visas for Russians

Slovakia has temporarily suspended the acceptance of Schengen visa applications from Russian citizens. The Association of Russian Tour Operators first reported the decision, according to Novaya Gazeta Europe.

During July and August, Slovakia will issue Schengen visas only to Russians traveling to attend specific sporting events. The restriction does not apply to national visas, which will continue to be issued for all approved purposes.

Applicants who have already submitted Schengen visa applications for tourism or private visits will have their applications automatically canceled. The visa center will refund any service fees already paid.

The measure is not expected to have a major impact on the Russian tourism market. Slovakia is not among the most popular destinations for Russian travelers and issued just 1,149 visas to Russian citizens in 2025. By comparison, Italy issued around 143,000.
