Meloni Wants to Deport Convicted Foreigners

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia party has introduced a bill tightening measures against foreign nationals convicted of crimes.

Under the proposal, all non-EU citizens sentenced to more than one year in prison would be deported to their home countries regardless of consent.

Deportations would be carried out under bilateral agreements between Italy and the relevant countries. Convicts could challenge deportation only in exceptional cases, such as facing inhuman treatment or the death penalty in their home country.

The bill also expands the range of criminal offenses for which foreigners may have their Italian citizenship revoked.

The tightening of migration policy comes ahead of next year's parliamentary elections, as the ruling parties face growing competition from the Futuro Nazionale movement.
