South African World Cup Star Dies at 25
South African national soccer team player Jayden Adams, who played in all three group stage matches at the ongoing World Cup, has died at the age of 25. The South African ministry of sport officially announced this on Saturday. The exact cause of his sudden death was not disclosed.
The talented midfielder started in the Group A matches against Mexico and the Czech Republic and, as a substitute, helped secure a historic 1–0 victory over South Korea, which secured the country's advancement to the knockout stage.
At the club level, Adams played for Mamelodi Sundowns of Pretoria, which he joined in January 2025 after a stint at the Stellenbosch FC youth academy. He helped his club win the prestigious African Champions League title during the 2025–26 season.
The country's official players' association and Minister of Sports Gayton McKenzie expressed their deepest condolences to his entire family and teammates. In their statements, they highlighted his dedication to the game and his immense talent.
Adams made his national team debut in 2022 against Mozambique. In total, he wore the jersey of the team nicknamed "Bafana Bafana" in 13 matches, scoring two goals, both in crucial World Cup qualifying matches.
