EU Plans Tighter Rules for Children's Access to Social Media
The European Commission will present a proposal after the summer break to restrict children's access to social media, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced.
According to von der Leyen, children need more time in the real world – to play, build friendships, make mistakes and develop their identities before being shaped by social media algorithms.
She emphasized that the proposed legislation is not about whether children should be allowed to use social media. Instead, the key question is under what conditions – and at what age – social media platforms should be permitted to provide their services to children.
