UN Agency Opposes US Strait of Hormuz Tolls
The United Nations' International Maritime Organization (IMO) said on Monday that it opposes fees on commercial vessels transiting international waterways.
The statement followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump that the United States would immediately reinstate its naval blockade of Iran and impose a 20% toll on all cargo transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
An IMO spokesperson said the organization was aware of the unilateral proposal but was awaiting further details. He added that the IMO's position on such fees has remained consistent for many years.
Under international law, there is no legal basis for imposing mandatory tolls on vessels simply to transit straits used for international navigation.
Shipping industry officials also voiced concern, arguing that the proposal would violate international law.
One industry official, who declined to be identified, questioned how the proposal would make passage through the strait safer or what guarantees it would provide for shipping companies.
