Former Pentagon Chief Questions Trump's Iran Strategy
Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper says the United States cannot win a war with Iran through airstrikes alone, arguing that stronger economic pressure on Tehran would be more effective than an expanded bombing campaign.
The Trump administration launched further strikes on Iran on Wednesday, with President Donald Trump saying military operations would intensify in the coming weeks. Speaking to the Financial Times, Esper said airstrikes alone would neither change Tehran's position nor prevent it from seeking to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Esper argued that a sustained campaign of economic pressure would be more effective, although it would require time, patience, discipline and international support. He also warned that such a strategy would likely lead to higher fuel prices in the short term.
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of global oil supplies pass, have already pushed Brent crude prices up 16% since the beginning of July to around $85 a barrel. Analysts warn that a prolonged disruption to shipping could drive prices above $100 a barrel.
Esper also warned that the conflict is becoming increasingly costly and could undermine US preparedness for other security challenges, particularly those involving China. He said restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and reaching a new nuclear agreement with Iran would constitute a successful outcome.
