Trump to Speak on Election Security as Midterms Near
US President Donald Trump plans to deliver a prime-time speech on election security on Thursday evening ahead of November's congressional elections.
According to Reuters, the White House is considering whether Trump's speech should include sensitive intelligence about China's intention or ability to interfere in the 2020 presidential election.
Sources told Reuters the intelligence does not show that Beijing manipulated votes or changed the election result. Some administration officials are concerned that Trump could present the material in a misleading way.
Trump has repeatedly questioned the outcome of the 2020 election, although audits, recounts and court proceedings found no evidence of widespread fraud that could have changed the result.
Democratic members of the House Intelligence Committee, meanwhile, have warned intelligence agencies against allowing classified information to be used for political purposes.
Republicans are approaching the midterms in a difficult political climate, as Trump's weak approval ratings are compounded by public discontent over the Iran war and elevated energy prices.
