Budapest Drops Charges Against Right-Wing Influencer

The Budapest Chief Prosecutor's Office has dropped terrorism charges against right-wing influencer Istvan Szakacs after concluding there is insufficient evidence to continue the criminal prosecution.

The case began on 8 July with a police raid on his home, during which officers searched the premises and his person and seized property. Szakacs, known for his collaboration with the pro-government platform Megafon, was subsequently charged with threatening to commit a terrorist act.

He immediately appealed both the raid and the charges, asserting that he had not committed any crime. After reviewing the case file, the prosecutor's office acknowledged his objections to the charges but confirmed the legality of the police raid.

According to the prosecutor's office, police had a sufficient degree of suspicion at the start of the investigation to carry out searches and other procedural actions. The case has sparked significant media and political attention in Hungary.
