EU Sees Migration as Solution to Population Aging
The European Commission considers migration a key tool for mitigating the effects of an aging population and a shrinking workforce, according to Hungarian Conservative.
Commissioner for Demography Dubravka Suica described legal migration as a necessity, given that most incoming migrants are of working age.
According to the latest demographic report, the EU's population will peak at 453.3 million in 2029 but will decline to approximately 398.8 million by 2100.
As early as 2038, there will be more people over the age of 65 than people aged 20 to 40. Brussels is therefore developing the Talent Partnerships and EU Talent Pool programs, designed to connect workers from non-EU countries with the European labor market.
However, the report itself also points out that migration can only slow the pace of population aging, not stop it. This is because immigrants also age, and their fertility rates gradually approach those of the native population.
