Canada Evacuates Hundreds as Wildfires Threaten Communities

The Canadian Armed Forces are preparing to evacuate approximately 600 residents of the remote community of Fort Hope in northwestern Ontario, which is under immediate threat from widespread wildfires. Since the area has limited road infrastructure, the evacuation will be carried out by air.

Since the start of the season, thousands of people have already been moved from the affected regions to safer parts of the province. Canadian authorities are tracking 955 active fires, with another 69 added in a single night.

Smoke from the fires has significantly worsened air quality in the United States as well, where health warnings have been issued in several states.

President Donald Trump accused Canada of inadequate forest management and threatened to factor the costs associated with air pollution into tariffs on Canadian goods.

Ottawa responded by noting that it has invested billions of dollars in fire prevention and forest protection since 2020.
