Belgium Bans Imports from West Bank

According to the Euractiv website, the Belgian federal government approved a comprehensive package of 88 documents ahead of the upcoming summer vacation. Among the most significant measures approved is an import ban on goods from the West Bank, since Belgium defines the Israeli settlements in the region as an illegal occupation of Palestinian territories

The measure was originally proposed late last summer as a direct response to Israel's intense military campaign in the Gaza Strip. However, the proposal was blocked for many months by a political stalemate within the governing coalition.

Belgian media report that the exact details and conditions of the embargo, including the list of affected sectors and any possible provision limiting its duration, remain unknown for now.

This move comes amid broader discussions within the European Union. The European Commission recently presented member states with an analysis outlining several options for sanctioning Israel, including import licenses, additional tariffs or a blanket ban. France, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain, along with Belgium, support the toughest approach, while Germany and Italy are opposed.

In this context, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot sharply criticized the EU for its hesitation, describing the Commission's proposals to date as symbolic gestures rather than a genuine effort to make progress.
