IAEA Investigates Attack on Iran's Nuclear Plant Construction Site

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Sunday that it is conducting an intensive investigation into reports of a nighttime attack on the construction site of the planned Darkhovin nuclear power plant in Iran.

At the same time, the UN oversight agency sought to calm the situation by stating that the power facility is in a very early stage of construction and that, during the last inspection, no nuclear material was found there that could pose an immediate radiation risk.

Iran's Atomic Energy Organization strongly condemned the nighttime attack on the facility under construction and attributed it to the US military. According to the Iranian semi-official Mehr News Agency, Tehran described the move as a gross violation of international law, though it did not immediately provide further details on the exact time of the incident or the extent of the damage.

Construction of the strategic nuclear facility, located in Khuzestan Province in southwestern Iran, began in late 2022.
