Ferry Sinks Off Coast of Guyana, Only 67 of 116 Rescued So Far
A ferry carrying 116 passengers sank late Saturday evening off the coast of Guyana in South America. Guyanese authorities said 67 people, including 15 children, have been rescued so far.
According to local media, the air traffic control tower received a distress signal from the MV Barima at 11:01 p.m. on Saturday, triggering a search and rescue operation.
The ferry, which also carried 17 crew members, capsized off the North Atlantic coast while en route to the village of Port Kaituma.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips said at a press conference on Sunday morning that the operation would continue until all possibilities had been exhausted.
