Houthis Expand Conflict with Saudi Naval Blockade

Yemen's Houthi rebels have announced a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, expanding the regional conflict linked to the war involving Iran and the United States. The group said the move was in retaliation for Saudi Arabia's long standing blockade of Yemen and that it takes effect immediately.

According to available information, Iran has urged the Houthis to close the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, if US attacks continue.

A complete blockade of the waterway could reduce global oil supplies by about 7% and further disrupt international trade and energy markets.

At the same time, there are signs that diplomatic efforts may be resuming. Tehran has received a proposal for a 10 day ceasefire with the US, with Pakistan once again acting as a mediator. Despite those contacts, exchanges of fire continue and tensions across the region remain high.
