Italy Restricts Sex Education in Schools

The government of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is introducing new rules on sex education in schools. Under the new law, activities related to sexuality will be prohibited in preschools and primary schools, while secondary schools will be allowed to offer them only with prior written parental consent according to Weltwoche.

Parents must be informed in advance about the content, objectives and teaching materials of any lessons dealing with sexuality before giving their approval.

The changes come amid a broader European debate over the scope of sex education and which topics should be included in school curricula.

Supporters of the law argue that it strengthens parental rights and prevents schools or outside organizations from introducing what they consider ideologically sensitive subjects, including gender identity.
