Merz Ally Frei to Lead CDU/CSU Group After Spahn Exit

Germany's ruling conservative CDU/CSU coalition will replace the chair of its parliamentary caucus. Jens Spahn, who resigned over the weekend following controversy surrounding the birth of his child via a surrogate mother in the United States, will be replaced by Thorsten Frei.

Frei is a longtime close associate of Chancellor Friedrich Merz and currently head of the chancellor's office.

Spahn's resignation came after criticism that his personal decision contradicted the CDU's stance. The party has long opposed the legalization of surrogacy and reaffirmed its support for a ban on it in Germany in February.

Frei will take up his parliamentary post at a time when the government is facing low public support and criticism for poor coordination between the chancellery, ministries and coalition partners.
